Purvanchal is called Ashtalakshmi, and Assam is regarded as an important state of Northeast India and the gateway to the Northeast. Guwahati is the largest city of Assam. In the past few decades, Assam had become a centre of anti-national and extremist activities. Extremist and terrorist armed organisations that plotted to separate Assam from Hindustan were active there on a large scale. The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which demanded an independent Assam, and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which demanded an independent Bodoland, along with many of their armed groups, were actively operating there. In the later period, several groups of these organisations engaged in extremist activities. However, peace has prevailed there for the past three decades. National unity and peace have been established in Assam and Purvanchal, and the sacrifices of the workers of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have played an important role in this. Pramod Narayan Dikshit was a martyred Sangh Pracharak of Purvanchal.
Considering the geographical structure of Assam, infiltration, and the influence of anti-national forces, the Sangh had to establish its work in Purvanchal in those times through great struggle. In earlier times itself, the first-generation Pracharaks of the Sangh—Dadarao Paramarth, Vasantrao Oak, and Krishnaji Paranjape had sown the seeds of nationalist thought of Sangh work in Assam of Purvanchal and, through hard labour and struggle, established the work of the Sangh there on a permanent basis. In Assam, Tripura of Purvanchal, and Kerala, Sangh work constantly faced fierce opposition from separatist forces. Sangh workers and Pracharaks also had to face great struggles there. In this process, many Swayamsevaks were also brutally murdered. But without caring for their lives and even making the supreme sacrifice when required, Sangh Swayamsevaks sowed and kept alive the nationalist thought of the Sangh in that land. Even today, Leftists and hypocritical secularists continuously discuss in the country, making a false accusation regarding the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi to defame the Sangh. However, these very hypocritical people who defame the Sangh remain completely silent, swallowing their tongues, without uttering a single word about the brutal murders of hundreds of Sangh workers and Pracharaks that took place in Purvanchal. They do not even hold a simple discussion. Therefore, on the occasion of the martyrdom remembrance day of Pramod Dikshit, there is a need to recognise the hypocritical and double-faced nature of the Leftists and hypocritical secular pretenders.
Pramod Dikshit as Pracharak in Assam
The Dikshit family, originally from Bhor in Pune district, settled in Pune, and Pramod Narayan Dikshit was a Swayamsevak of Pune. He was born on 5 June 1949 in Pune. His education was also completed in Pune. He completed his B.Sc. education from Fergusson College, Pune. From childhood itself, he came into contact with the Shakha of the Sangh. Influenced by the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Pramod Dikshit became a worker of the Sangh and later also accepted the life of a Pracharak. During the oppressive period of the Emergency, he remained underground and carried out the difficult work of public awakening. Later, without thinking of a job, he decided to accept the life of a Pracharak in 1978 and set out as a Pracharak of the Sangh from Pune city. He was assigned the Assam work area. In the working method of the Sangh, one has to work with a dedicated spirit in the work area assigned by the Sangh; one cannot work there according to one’s own wishes. Since this value was in the blood of Pramod Dikshit, he joined as a Pracharak in Assam. He began his Pracharak life in Nalbari. Overcoming language, food habits, and inadequate resources, after working in Nalbari for nearly four years, he was given the responsibility of Guwahati Nagar Pracharak in Assam. While establishing the work, new experiments and creativity were the special features of his work. He had the skill of connecting people with Sangh work by interacting with everyone—from labourers to first-class officers and from KG to PG students. That is why, using new experiments and new creativity in Guwahati city, he tried to give a permanent form to Sangh work. Among these, the blood donation movement can be considered a major experiment.
Dr. Hedgewar Smarak Raktnidhi
When Pramod Dikshit was the Guwahati Nagar Pracharak, there was a major problem of blood donation in Guwahati. Many times patients had to pay money for blood. There were also huge misconceptions and superstitions among citizens regarding blood donation. As a result, patients sometimes even died due to lack of blood. Pramod Dikshit went to the root of the blood problem and started efforts to find a permanent solution. Accepting the challenge of the problem in accordance with the following lines from the Sangh Geet, he established a permanent structure in Guwahati city:
Bhagavantache jaya labhale, chir vijayi vardaan!
Sangha vachun kona swikaril kaalaache aavhaan॥
Pramod Dikshit created awareness in society about blood donation through public awakening. For this, he maintained contact among the youth, prepared an extensive list of blood donors, and, despite inadequate means of communication, also planned a prompt contact system. By maintaining special contact with doctors, he organised blood group testing camps and paid special attention to updating the list of blood donors through them. As a result, the diagnosis of the blood problem was achieved in Guwahati city and a permanent structure was established. To give a broader social form to this work, the Doctor Hedgewar Smarak Raktnidhi organisation was established. Today, this organisation is making a major contribution to the blood donation movement in Assam, and the work of the Sangh is also flourishing.
The Fearless Pramod Dikshit Who Faced Bullets on His Chest
In the working method of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, changes in the geographical work area and responsibility of Pracharaks are always expected. Accordingly, Pramod Dikshit’s Guwahati work area was changed, and he was given the responsibility of Barpeta district. Along with Sangh work in Guwahati city, Pramod Dikshit had also given a permanent form to service work. Therefore, as soon as he was appointed as Barpeta District Pracharak, he started new experiments there as well. Shankardev Shishu Niketan can be considered his new experiment. At that time, there was a major influence of extremist organisations in Barpeta district. There was a network of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). In western Assam, in the Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, and Kokrajhar areas, the activities of the Bodo extremist organisation National Democratic Front of Bodoland were also large in scale. Therefore, carrying out Sangh work in the stronghold of extremist organisations was not easy but challenging work. Pramod Dikshit accepted the challenge of the extremists and established Sangh work there, and also expanded the scope of Sangh work. But this expansion of Sangh work constantly irritated the eyes of the extremists. On 16 August 1991, while Pramod Dikshit was present at the Keshavdham Sangh office in Barpeta, armed extremists entered the office. They asked who Pramod Dikshit was. Even though he knew that the persons who had come to the office were extremists, the fearless Pramod Dikshit, without the slightest delay, replied in Assamese, “I am Pramod Dikshit.” The extremists drew their pistols and fired a barrage of bullets. In the firing that took place, Pramod Dikshit fell in a pool of blood and attained martyrdom for the cause of the Sangh. The late Pramod Dikshit, who attained martyrdom for the national cause at the age of 42, has a memorial in Barpeta that bears witness to struggle and fearlessness for society. This article is written to pay homage to his sacred memory on the occasion of his remembrance day.
