Praveen Dixit joined IPS in 1977 in his first attempt and was allotted to Maharashtra Cadre. He completed following assignments with distinction.

• Since May 2022, Dixit has been appointed as Special rapporteur, in-charge of Maharashtra & Goa for National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi
• President of India appointed him as Vice Chairman, Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal, (MAT) at the Principal Bench at Mumbai from 2018-2021
• Dixit served as Chairman, of Maharashtra State Purchase Committee for medical equipment and medicines in Directorate of Medical Education & Research . He also served as Advisor to Medical Colleges from 2016-2018
• Dixit was appointed Director General of Police from 2015-2016
• Dixit was appointed as Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau 2013-2015
• Dixit was appointed as Managing Director and DG, Maharashtra Police Housing & Welfare Corporation from 2011-2013
• Dixit served as Principal Secretary, Home Department, and was in-charge of Law & Order from 2010-2011
• Dixit was Commissioner of Police, Nagpur City from 2008-2010
• Dixit was Additional DG, Training & Special Units in 2007
• He was Additional DG in-charge of Investigation wing in State Human Rights Commission
• Dixit was selected to be Coordinator of Indian Technical & Economic Cooperation Team to identify Training Needs of civil servants in Mauritius. He served in this capacity from 2004-2006
• Dixit was handpicked to be World Peace Fellow by Rotary International to undergo Masters in International Development at Sanford School of Public Policy in Duke University, North Carolina, USA
• Dixit served as Deputy Director, Yashada (Y. Chavan Academy of Administration) and Acting Director General 2000-2002
• Dixit was selected to work in Intelligence Bureau as Assistant Director and Deputy Director. He served at IB Head Quarters, ITBF Leh, Ladakh and SIB, Mumbai.
• Dixit was Superintendent of Police in Raigad from 1983-1985
• Dixit was Commandant SRPF in Group VII from 1981-1983
